Welsh Oil Tank Regulations – does your tank comply?

The main requirement, which is that oil storage tanks need to be bunded (surrounded by a secondary containment wall) from 15th March 2016, has now been extended to all storage tanks, meaning any oil storage tanks in use for non-domestic purposes will need to be compliant from 15th March 2020.

Domestic oil tanks installed before 15th March 2016 will be exempt until replaced, however agricultural fuel oil tanks which were exempt under the SSAFO regulations, will no longer be exempt if installed before 1991. This means any non-bunded agricultural fuel oil tanks, will need to be replaced with a bunded tank.

For more information on these updated regulations, please see the guidance for Keeping your oil storage safe, or click here to read this handy FAQ page released by Natural Resources Wales.
