Phase 2 of the regulations came into force on 1st January 2023, with the exception of the 170kg/ha nitrogen limit.

In the last 2 years the updated Welsh regulations have been brought more in line with the English regulations since the introduction of Wales’s ‘Whole NVZ’ ruling.

If your farm is within an NVZ, you may be able to apply for a grassland derogation to use up to 250kg of nitrogen per hectare from grazing livestock manure.

Following the recent dismissal of NFU Cymru’s judicial review, the Welsh Government’s new water quality regulations which imposed a blanket NVZ across Wales on 1st April 2021, will remain in place in their current form.

In accordance with SMR1: Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs), livestock numbers must be recorded, and nitrogen produced calculated and recorded by 30 April each year.
