On January 15th DEFRA added its key findings on payment rates for the new Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELM), to the September 2020 ‘Tests and Trials’ document.

From January 2021, farmers must follow cross compliance rules if they claim the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS), a Stewardship scheme or the English Woodland Grant Scheme (EWGS). The rules set out in this guide apply for the whole of 2021 and must be met throughout the year.

The new and improved Countryside Stewardship scheme opened on Tuesday 9th of February for agreements to start on 1st January 2022. The scheme which is administered by the Rural Payments Agency, offers financial incentives to encourage farmers and land managers to protect and improve the natural environment.

The Welsh Government had initially given Wales three years to address agricultural pollution issues. However, with pollution issues remaining high and an average of three incidents per week, the Welsh Government has decided to act.

Ahead of the new application window for Countryside Stewardship this year, the RPA have announced that there will be 2 new options available for 2021 applications.
