From 1st October 2023 changes in the law came into effect which require farmers to provide photo ID when purchasing ammonium nitrate (AN) fertiliser.
This comes after the Home Office amended the Control of Poisons and Explosives Precursors Regulations 2023 to include additional substances, such as AN with a nitrogen content of 16% or more.
These changes apply to compounds, blends, and mixtures including NPK fertiliser containing ammonium nitrate at or above the nitrogen content threshold.
The changes to the law farmers need to be aware of include:
- From October 1st it will be mandatory to provide photo ID (e.g., a driving license, passport, gun license, trade identification card, business ID card) when ordering AN fertiliser.
- Farmers purchasing AN fertiliser containing 16% nitrogen and above must prove their identity with photo ID.
- The purchase of any compound fertilisers containing 16% nitrogen and above derived from AN (this includes N from calcium ammonium nitrate) will also require photo ID.
- Purchases of certain plant protection products (PPPs), biocides and acids are also affected and will require photo ID.
