Mental Health in Winter

Christmas for many is generally a time to come together, to celebrate and spread joy. However, within farming communities this is not always the case as many farmers are continuing to feel the impact of high inflation and the cost of living crisis. Livestock farms at Christmas can also be a particularly busy with livestock to feed and tend to and early lambing just around the corner. The winter months can be lonely and isolating, with dark nights and poor weather creating additional challenges.

If working alone at Christmas in the lambing sheds or other areas of the farm becomes mentally challenging it is reassuring to know that support is always available. Whether you need someone to talk to, or advice on financial matters, the following charities are here to provide the help you need:

We are Farming MindsWe are Farming Minds (0808 802 0070)

This is a Herefordshire based charity which has been set up to raise awareness for mental health and wellness in the farming community. They often hold events, talks and training for those in need. It was founded by a farmer who struggled with their own mental health issues and wanted to make a difference to others in the same position.

The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI)The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (0800 188 4444)

R.A.B.I offers financial support to farming people of all ages facing hardship. Every application for support is treated on its own merit, working with compassion and discretion. Support is offered on both a short-term and long-term basis, with many becoming ‘full beneficiaries’ of the charity, receiving ongoing payments.

YANAYANA  (0300 3230400)

The YANA Project provides confidential support, mental health awareness and funding for counselling for those in farming and rural trades in Norfolk, Suffolk and Worcestershire and has compiled, published and funded a directory of regional support groups and key national charities which can specifically help those in the rural communities.

The DPJ FoundationThe DPJ Foundation  (0800 587 4262)

The DPJ Foundation was set up in July 2016 in Pembrokeshire, supporting those in the agricultural sector. The mental health charity has grown and covers the whole of Wales with all areas of support. The DPJ Foundation works with leading organisations in the sector, including NFU Cymru, FUW, YFC, vets and Welsh Government, to help provide an accessible and flexible service.

MindMind (0300 123 3393)

Mind provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. The charity campaigns to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

The Farming Community NetworkThe Farming Community Network (Helpline: 03000 111 999)

The FCN is the first port of call for pastoral and practical support for anyone in the farming community, with a particular focus on farmers and farming families. The helpline is available every day of the year, 7am to 11pm.

Forage aidForage aid (01926 620135)

Forage Aid provides emergency animal feed and bedding to UK farmers hit by extreme weather events or natural disasters.

FarmWell also offers useful guidance on personal resilience.
