Farmers should also be aware of LEAF Marque certification rules, which differ from Red Tractor’s continuous renewal cycle. LEAF certificates expire annually, so staying on top of audits is essential.

Publication of UK Farm Assurance Review

The long-awaited Farm Assurance Review has been published, assessing farm-to-fork assurance schemes across the UK. This comprehensive report, commissioned by the NFU and AHDB in January 2024, evaluates whether current schemes effectively serve farmers and supply chains while ensuring they remain fit for a modern farming environment

In March 2024, the UK farming unions and AHDB appointed an independent commission to oversee the review and Promar was appointed to support the data gathering and the production of the report. The report outlines nine key strategic themes to drive improvements in farm assurance:

  1. Simplify on-farm audits – reduce, streamline, and ensure consistency in audits.
  2. Embrace technology – use data and digital solutions to add value and efficiency.
  3. Farmer-led standards – ensure farmers have a stronger voice in shaping assurance schemes.
  4. Environmental focus – establish clear environmental ambitions as a competitive advantage.
  5. Earned recognition’ for regulations – align assurance schemes with regulatory requirements to reduce duplication.
  6. Better UK coordination – improve cooperation across the UK’s assurance schemes.
  7. Global market positioning – strengthen the UK farming’s competitive edge in world markets.
  8. Enhanced communication – improve how assurance schemes engage with and inform farmers.
  9. Red Tractor governance – implement recommendations from the Campbell Tickell report (governance review).

The NFU hope this report will provide a reset moment to enable Farm Assurance Schemes to better deliver for the whole UK food supply chain and will work with stakeholders to take the recommendations forward.

LEAF Certificate Expiry Dates

When it comes to certification cycles, it’s important to understand the differences between Red Tractor and LEAF certification, to avoid any confusion around expired LEAF certificates.

  • Red Tractor Certificates – these are issued every time a renewal payment is made, meaning the certification cycle is continuous.
  • LEAF Marque Certificates – these are issued once an audit is completed, and they follow an annual certification cycle. The certificate expires after one year, regardless of payment. The expiry date remains the same each year, as per LEAF Scheme rules. If an audit cannot be completed on time before the expiry date, you may request a certificate extension directly from NSF, and we can submit the request to LEAF on your behalf.
LEAF Marque v17

Every few years the LEAF Marque Standard is reviewed to ensure it remains relevant. LEAF is currently in the process of developing the next version of the LEAF Marque Standard (v17.0) and it is estimated that this will come into effect in 2026.
