April Deadline Looming for NVZs

In England and Wales SMR1 sets out the requirements for farmers and landowners to reduce water pollution from nitrates by using and storing fertiliser and manure carefully. In accordance with SMR1, livestock numbers must be recorded, and nitrogen produced calculated and recorded by 30th April each year.

England

For any land located in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ), you must have recorded the number of ‘specified’ livestock kept on your farm during the previous calendar year and calculated the amount of nitrogen they produced by this date. You must also record the number and type of livestock in a building or hardstanding during the previous storage period.

These requirements apply if your holding is fully or partially within an NVZ area.

Wales

You must have recorded the number and type of livestock kept on your farm and the amount of time the livestock spent on your farm during the previous calendar year. You must also have calculated the amount of nitrogen they produced in the previous calendar year by this date. You must also record the number and type of livestock in a building or hard standing during the previous storage period. The 30th April date applies only to holdings previously in an NVZ. For all other land, this information must be recorded by 31st August each year.
