Small Infrastructure Grant Open in Wales

Written by Evie Price, Head of Stewardship & Grants at CXCS

The Small Infrastructure Grant is now open for applications in Wales, offering farmers funding towards roofing over existing livestock feeding and gathering areas and manure storage areas.

Funding is available at a standard rate of £40 per m², with grants of between £3,000 and £15,000 available per applicant or agreement holder per financial year.

For farms already considering improvements to these areas, the scheme could help towards the cost of work while reducing the amount of clean rainwater entering slurry and manure management systems.

There are, however, some important eligibility requirements to be aware of, including that the area being roofed must already have an impermeable concrete floor.

Evie Price, Head of Stewardship & Grants at CXCS, explains what the grant can support, how much funding is available and what farmers need to consider before applying.

What can the Small Infrastructure Grant support?

Funding is available towards:

  • Roofing over existing livestock feeding areas
  • Roofing over existing livestock gathering areas
  • Roofing over existing manure storage areas

The area being roofed must have an existing concrete floor that is impermeable to water.

The grant does not cover the creation of new manure stores, feeding areas or gathering areas, so if you have a project in mind, it is worth checking that the existing area meets the scheme requirements before applying.

How much funding is available?

The grant provides a standard cost contribution of £40 per m² of roof installed.

The minimum grant award is £3,000 per application, with a maximum of £15,000 per applicant or agreement holder per financial year.

More than one application can be made during the financial year, subject to the overall £15,000 limit and the conditions of the scheme.

What do you need before applying?

Applications are made through Rural Payments Wales (RPW) Online.

You will need to provide geo-tagged photographs to demonstrate the eligibility of the site, and it is worth checking at an early stage whether any permissions or approvals will be needed for the proposed work.

It is also important not to purchase any items included in your application before you receive your Grant Award Letter.

Checking the eligibility of your proposed project and gathering the necessary evidence before you apply can help avoid delays or problems with your application later.

More funding coming up

Further funding opportunities are also due to open in Wales, including the Infrastructure and Equipment Scheme, which is currently scheduled to open in October 2026.

You can keep up to date with forthcoming schemes and application windows on the Welsh Government rural schemes application dates page.
