The HCC (Hybu Cig Cymru), AHDB (Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board) and QMS (Quality Meat Scotland) have been collaborating for over the last two years to support and promote the British red meat industry.
They have just announced their funding has been raised from £2 million to £3.5 million from 1st April 2020. The extra funding will be used specifically on boosting reputation of the industry and ultimately promoting British red meat sales around the world. Focus will be placed on the nutritional benefits of red meat and addressing any misconceptions about the meat and its production in England, Scotland and Wales.
“The industry is under tremendous pressure and we feel we can make even bigger progress on market development and export work, to find new markets for our products overseas, and the ongoing reputation work to promote all that is good and defend the industry from myths and misinformation.” – HCC, AHDB, QMS.
With the British population no longer eating out due to restrictions put in place to slow the spread of Covid-19, and even fast food chain McDonald’s temporarily closed, British beef and lamb producer’s will be taking another hit. Therefore, it will be more important than ever that red meat is promoted both within Britain and overseas.
This will also be a good time for beef and lamb producers to make use of social media to demonstrate at grass roots, why British meat deserves higher precedence over any imported red meat, as a large amount of the population will be spending more time online. Compliance with strict statutory regulations, and voluntary farm assurance schemes which hold the bar high for health, welfare, and food traceability, is just one argument in favour of British red meat.
