HSE Inspections on Farms: June 2019

Some of our Farm Safety Solutions clients received a notification letter from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that they would be subject to an inspection as part of the new campaign from the HSE.

After receiving a call from a frantic and worried client, whom had been informed by the HSE that they were visiting their dairy farm for a Health & Safety Inspection, one of CXCS’ H&S advisors attended free of charge to help assist the client through the process, and guide the inspecting officers around the farm.

The first step was for our advisor to introduce himself and the client to the inspectors (who hadn’t visited before), before introducing them to the farm business and its Health & Safety history.

This first step is made so much easier with our custom-built H&S file. Already up to date and current, it includes all the regulatory paperwork, including risk assessments and policies specific to the farm.

Once the paperwork is out of the way, the physical inspection of the farmyard takes place. Since we have been managing the H&S on this particular site, great improvements have been made with the advice from CXCS’ advisors, to ensure the farm is compliant with current H&S requirements.

Some simple improvements in the way things are completed and managed make a real difference to yours and your employees’ safety. If there are changes made towards improving the Health and Safety on the farm then you must document this. Evidence of improvement is key to Health and Safety record keeping.

As part of the physical inspection, the inspectors visited the main dairy and focused on the following topics:

  • Handling and Housing cattle
  • Risks to members of the public
  • Bale Handling and Stacking
  • Slurry
  • Children on Farms
  • Use of Chemicals
  • Working at Height (roofs etc)
  • Moving Vehicles

No issues found other than the ones that have already been highlighted in the Action Plan.

Conclusion

The whole visit lasted about two hours and was completed successfully. Before leaving, the inspectors thanked the client and CXCS. A couple of small points were raised, but “no issues found other than the ones that have already been highlighted in the Action Plan”. The inspectors also highlighted the excellent H&S management of the site and commended both the owner and CXCS.

If you do happen to be inspected, our attendances at inspections are free of charge, and part of the service. You will also receive a dedicated advisor who knows your farm.
