What3words is a map used worldwide for all emergency services and non-governmental organisations. It is available for anyone to use either via the website, or to download and use via a free app on your mobile phone.
It can often be hard to describe exactly where help is needed in a lot of rural areas, especially during an emergency. Using What3Words is the only way to give an exact location, as it was created by dividing the world into 3 metre squares and allocating a unique combination of three words for each square. Not only can it be used during emergencies, but it may prove to be useful around your site to provide locations for contractors, agents or anyone else visiting your premises.
How do I use What3Words in an emergency?
Find the what3words address for your current location on the free what3words app for iOS and Android. It works offline – ideal for areas with unreliable data connection. Share your 3-word address over the phone to the call handler.
How to find What3Words addresses
Enter a place name or address into the search bar at the top of the screen. Then switch to satellite mode and zoom in until you can see the grid. Tap the exact square you want the unique what3words reference for, and the combination will pop up. This works in the same way both on the website, or through the app.
