CXCS visited Kevindale Campsite in Shropshire in 2023 to carry out a fire risk assessment and complete a full health and safety risk management audit. After a follow-up visit in 2024, the campsite owners share how the CXCS health and safety service has given them the peace of mind that they have a system in place to keep their guests and staff safe.
As a campsite, we are required to have an annual fire safety risk assessment completed to identify general fire precautions and to fulfil requirements under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. As well as completing our fire risk assessments, CXCS also visited to complete a full health and safety risk management audit for us.
The visit
During the initial audit, CXCS were able to assess the site and help us with the following items:
- Risk assessments – these have been completed specifically for our campsite and cover all tasks that we undertake, ensuring we have risk assessed all aspects of the business.
- Action plan – action points have been identified where areas of risk have been highlighted.
- Our main site Health and Safety Policy, this includes Statements of Intent for us to display and communicate to our visitors and guests.
- Accident recording and near miss records so we can ensure these are being documented.
- Toolbox talks – these are useful for providing evidence that our staff have been inducted and have received information for all tasks we are asking them to complete.
- COSHH risk assessments – these have been completed for the chemicals we use on site.
- Site maps showing important health and safety information (e.g., location of first aid kits).
- Emergency contacts list with first aid and fire information for displaying on site.
- Contractor induction forms – these help us to ensure any contractors coming on to our site are competent, insured and fully inducted to complete the relevant jobs.
We run a small campsite, but health and safety is always at the forefront of our minds, and we want our guests and staff members to feel safe when visiting and working with us. It helps us to rest easy at night knowing that we have covered all bases where health and safety is concerned.
During our first visit in 2023, the following main action points were identified:
- Signage needs to be maintained around the site.
- Fire extinguishers need to be serviced or re-purchased.
- PAT testing should be completed.
- Site map needs to show any hazards and these need to be communicated to all visitors.
- Ensure staff training is up to date.
Improvements made
We have made various improvements across the site since undertaking the CXCS Health & Safety service. In 2024, during a follow-up site visit, we erected the recommended signage, displayed the site maps so they are available to anyone accessing the site, and marked fire assembly points for all to see. Staff have also received training and are aware of current Health and Safety legislation. We have up to date first aid kits around the campsite, and an accident book is available for guests and employees. Policies are accessible for staff to read and review at any time too.
During our follow-up visit, we had the chance to discuss health and safety on the site in more depth as we continue to work towards ensuring compliance with the Health & Safety Executive, and this meeting provided us with new targets and actions to complete. The ‘high, medium and low’ classification on our action plan makes it easier for us to view our targets and enables us to focus on the priority areas first. Our CXCS Health and Safety Advisor is on hand 24/7 for us to contact and continues to be particularly helpful in answering any questions or queries that we have.
Although we’ve ticked off several actions from our first initial audit, we know that health and safety is an ongoing process. We are always striving to stay compliant and keep up to date with rules and regulations, and we’re grateful to be working with CXCS who help us to achieve this!
