The Inspection

Very similar to a Red Tractor farm assurance audit, Trading Standards Inspections check that farms are correctly registered for the appropriate Feed Hygiene Regulation, storage and preparation of animal feed, and items of cross compliance. However, they only carry out inspections on 4% of farms that are members of a Red Tractor scheme. They often act like dummy inspections, and unless you are seriously breaking regulations or law, you will not be referred to a DEFRA inspection.

The Trading Standards Officer will check items including:

  • Movement records
  • Veterinary and medicine book
  • Rat baiting plans/competency
  • Veterinary and medicine storage
  • Pesticide storage/competency for spraying
  • Agricultural fuel storage
  • Feed storage and preparation equipment (e.g. mixer wagons)
  • Livestock transport (if transporting own)
  • Livestock housing and welfare
